The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a quality management system put in place to ensure companies are held to a high quality standard. To be International Organization for Standardization certified, companies have to undergo a thorough audit that assesses the management system, and the company’s ability to consistently meet customer requirements. According to ASQ:
Achieving certification means that an organization has demonstrated the following:
- Follows the guidelines of the ISO 9001 standard
- Fulfills its own requirements
- Meets customer requirements and statutory and regulatory requirements
- Maintains documentation
The old certification, ISO 9001:2008, will be expiring and organizations can no longer register with it starting September 2018. The new standard, ISO 9001:2015, emphasizes risk management; how will the company handle risk associated with threats and opportunities? What is the process for corrective action when a nonconformity (a deviation from a specification, a standard, or an expectation) occurs? Does the company have good communication? Keep proper documentation?
Customers can confidently work with International Organization for Standardization certified companies knowing they are continuously improving performance and efficiency to save time, money and resources.
