How to make a printed battery.

Take a regular coin cell or standard battery and smash it flat being careful to keep all the different chemical compounds separated else your battery will short. Carefully use a spatula to remove the pile of compounds off the flat metal case and place them onto a piece of polyester. Now get another piece of polyester and some glue and seal your battery chemical compound sandwich shut. Finally, take a scissors and cut off the excess polyester leaving sufficient glue to keep it sealed.

If only it were that easy. DISCLAIMER – This is not how you make a printed battery. Please do not attempt.

Rather than a hammer, the actual manufacturing process involves screen printing presses and lasers and chemical compounds modified to accommodate the new process. The end result is a thin flexible battery.

Like a lot of cool things that get developed, printed batteries are a solution for a not-yet-identified-problem. As such, they garnered a lot of interest from many different industries, but their adoption and use has been slow. Xymox licenses Enfucell’s printed battery technology to supply the North American market. Originally the plan was to make only batteries with the assumption that companies would incorporate the batteries into their design much like a traditional battery. That model has not proven out; most likely due to the price difference between traditional coin cells and printed batteries. Taking advantage of screen printing capabilities, customers are now interested in incorporating the battery directly into their application. Combining printed battery technology with traditional semi-conductor components, Flexible Hybrid Electronics show great promise. Enfucell and partners developed a temperature sensor label and golf patch sensor as examples.

Printed batteries come in many different varieties; disposable, rechargeable, high current, low current, lithium and zinc-manganese to name just a few. Experts forecast the market for printed batteries to hit $470 million in 2026. We hope that is true!
